CORE DRILLING WALL SAWING FLAT SAWING DEMOLITION

STANFORD UNIVERSITY: BUILDING 160

SCOPE OF WORK

Building 160 is one of the original ornate sandstone buildings that make up the Quad at Stanford University.

Built in 1898 as the Stanford Library, it is being redeveloped as the Wallenberg Learning Center – a $15 million project.

Although the entire interior was completely gutted, the historical exterior arcade walls were retrofitted
and preserved. The arches needed to be core drilled very carefully so as not to damage either the arches or the columns.

Nichols Concrete Cutting was chosen to do this delicate work.

We removed the inner stone layer of the arcade walls. And using a drill bit we had developed for this project we drilled through the arches in one go without damaging them.

Once the column was drilled, the hole was extended down into the foundations and up into the arched wall, to make space for the tube steel that creates a stronger support for both arch and walls.
